2024 Year in Review: Lessons from a Mere Mortal on Discipline, Family, and Growth

If I could summarise 2024 in one phrase, it would be Ryan Holiday's timeless Stoic maxim: "The obstacle is the way." This year, life didn’t hand me a neatly wrapped gift of ease or perfection. Instead, it presented challenges—some small, some monumental—that became my personal training ground for growth. From early wake-ups to navigate fatherhood, to the relentless balancing act of wearing multiple hats, 2024 was anything but predictable. Yet, in its unpredictability, I found clarity, strength, and purpose.

As we step into 2025, I want to reflect on the lessons that shaped me—not as a guru or expert, but as a mere mortal navigating the beautiful, chaotic journey of life.

Discipline: The Quiet Builder of Strength

There’s a reason Alex Hormozi’s mantra, "Success is in the reps," stuck with me this year. Whether it was waking up at 3:30 am to hit the gym or squeezing in work during quiet moments, discipline became my mental anchor. Early in the year, I leaned into my routines—running, lifting, cold plunges—not just for physical fitness but for the clarity and resolve they brought to my mind.

What I’ve learnt is this: discipline isn’t glamorous, and it doesn’t always feel good in the moment. But it creates a foundation for everything else. It’s the quiet, unshakable force that allows you to keep going when the noise of life threatens to drown you out.

Discipline is less about willpower and more about creating habits that support the person you want to become.

Family: The Ultimate Compass

In a world that glorifies productivity and achievement, I discovered that my greatest wealth is at home. Family time became my constant rhythm—whether it was bedtime routines with my daughter or conversations with my partner. I learnt that being present isn’t about clocking hours; it’s about showing up wholeheartedly in the moments that matter most.

Family isn’t an interruption to our goals—it’s the very reason we strive for them. In 2024, I chose to prioritise connection over perfection, and it grounded me in ways I never thought possible.

Success is hollow without relationships. Invest in the people who make your life richer.

Balancing Roles: Doing Less to Achieve More

This year, I faced the delicate dance of balancing multiple roles—father, partner, podcaster, business owner, and advisor. It was a humbling realisation: trying to do everything doesn’t lead to excellence; it leads to mediocrity. Inspired by Tim Ferriss, I started saying “no” to tasks that didn’t align with my values and focused on the few things that truly mattered.

It wasn’t easy. But learning to eliminate the unnecessary freed up mental space and energy for the things that deserved my best effort.

High performance isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing the right things well.

Mindfulness: Leading with Empathy

Borrowing wisdom from Robert Greene, I dove deep into the practice of emotional intelligence. Whether it was managing toddler tantrums or navigating work stress, I learnt to default to empathy rather than frustration. Honest conversations, active listening, and intentional presence became the cornerstones of my relationships.

Mindfulness isn’t just about meditation or stillness—it’s about being fully present in the messy, emotional, imperfect moments of life.

Every challenge is an opportunity to practise emotional agility. Approach each one with curiosity and kindness.

Adaptability: Embracing the Unexpected

As Mike Tyson famously said, "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." This year punched me plenty. Unexpected changes, shifting roles, and personal setbacks tested my resolve. But instead of resisting, I chose to adapt. From shifting my content creation schedule to prioritising flexibility in my daily routines, I learnt to embrace change as a constant.

Adaptability isn’t about giving up; it’s about recalibrating. It’s the mindset that turns obstacles into stepping stones and keeps you moving forward.

True strength lies in flexibility. Be willing to pivot, adjust, and grow.

Final Thought: Conquering the World by Conquering Yourself

As I close the chapter on 2024, I’m reminded of Zeno of Citium’s words: "Man conquers the world by conquering himself." The most profound victories aren’t external—they’re internal. They’re the moments when your thoughts, words, and actions align, and you move through life with clarity and purpose.

I don’t claim to have it all figured out. But if there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s this: life is about progress, not perfection. It’s about showing up, trying your best, and being willing to learn and adapt along the way.

2025 will have its own set of challenges and triumphs, and I’m ready to meet them with humility, discipline, and a renewed focus on what truly matters. Because in the end, it’s not about conquering the world—it’s about building a life you’re proud of, one day at a time.
